Agriculture:

Agriculture continues to make dramatic changes. Because of the size of farms and the capital required to make those changes, Harrison County is in a dilemma. Should we make the changes to stay competitive or try to hold on to the past.

Because of Extension, many are adapting to changes. Soil testing has continued to increase, greenhouses are being built to grow plants for our tobacco crop. Farmers are even marketing livestock together, which is a major change from the past independence.

ag1.JPG (14437 bytes)Extension informs local producers in changes in chemicals, weed and disease controls (culturally and chemically), the need of equipment modification to adapt to current changes, and labor saving ideas which will save money. These changes are adopted through demonstrations, field days, newsletters, and working with other cooperative agriculture groups.

Alternative methods in farming is a issue becoming popular. This methods are being passed on to the producer. As new programs are developed, we will continue to keep local clientele informed.
