Agriculture:
Agriculture continues to make dramatic changes. Because of the size of farms and the
capital required to make those changes, Harrison County is in a dilemma. Should we make
the changes to stay competitive or try to hold on to the past.
Because of Extension, many are adapting to changes. Soil testing has continued to
increase, greenhouses are being built to grow plants for our tobacco crop. Farmers are
even marketing livestock together, which is a major change from the past independence.
Extension informs local producers in changes in chemicals,
weed and disease controls (culturally and chemically), the need of equipment modification
to adapt to current changes, and labor saving ideas which will save money. These changes
are adopted through demonstrations, field days, newsletters, and working with other
cooperative agriculture groups.
Alternative methods in farming is a issue becoming
popular. This methods are being passed on to the producer. As new programs are developed,
we will continue to keep local clientele informed. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
Harrison
County is a giving community. With organizations like the Harrison County Beef Cattle
Association and the Harrison County Ag. Council many project are accomplished which effect
the community. Many hours of volunteer work help create funding for adult education and
youth events. With the hard work of these producers, many changes are made that make a
difference.
