A Winning Candidate...

Born and raised on a tobacco farm.

Married Alice Woods; two children and two grandchildren.

Captain, University of Kentucky Basketball team under legendary coach Adolph Rupp.

A three term mayor of Lexington who lives on and manages a farm.

A three term Congressman from Kentucky's Sixth District winning by wide margins each election.

A Winning Team...

Scotty has assembled a strong team to win. The Baesler Team:

Nationally renowned Washington pollster Mark Mellman of the Mellman Group.

Award winning political and media consultants, Trippi, McMahon and Squier.

Established central campaign office with professional staff on board and working hard everyday.

National fund-raising office established with a National Finance Director already on board.

State Finance office established with a full-time Kentucky Finance Director.

A Winning Campaign...

Scotty Baesler's strategy for victory:

Give the voters a clear choice to elect-a strong, independent voice for Kentucky - someone who reflects Kentucky values.

Scotty is a proven vote getter. He has won his Congressional seat three times with double digit margins.

Scotty is the early favorite with a campaign in place and running "full speed."

He is Kentucky's only Democrat in the House of Representatives.

Scotty is the best bet to lead the ticket in 1998.

Polling...

The nationally respected firm of Hickman-Brown conducted a survey on behalf of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, testing the viability of several potential candidates against the likely GOP nominee, Representative Jim Bunning.

Hickman- Brown's findings are unequivocal. Baesler is the only Democrat now in the race who "lead[s) Bunning." He "stands an excellent chance of retaining the United States Senate seat being vacated by Wendell Ford."

  • Scotty Baesler leads by 5 percentage points (well outside the margin of effort) among all voters surveyed, and an astounding 8% among definite voters.
  • Baesler has higher personal popularity ratings than Bunning, and a much better favorable to unfavorable ratio. In fact, with a favorable rating of 26%, 18% neutral and 24% unfavorable, Bunning's personal popularity rating is lower than any of 18 individuals tested except one. By comparison, Scotty Baesler has a favorable ratio of 2 to 1.
  • Bunning has clearly suffered from the recent publicity over his intemperate renunciation of the University of Kentucky basketball team, and unprovoked attack on Coach Rick Pitino. About half of all voters say the incident makes them less likely to vote for him in the Senate race.

Conclusion:
Scotty Baesler is strongly positioned to beat Jim Bunning in the general election. Given adequate resources, Wendell Ford's U.S. Senate seat will remain with a strong, moderate, effective leader - from the heart of Kentucky, with Kentucky at heart.
